Household Uses for Steel Wool

Steel wool has been around for a long time, and it has been a staple in many people’s homes since it became commercially available. If you are not privy to all the ways that you can use steel wool around your home, allow us to shed some light on the matter.

Shine Up Your Gardening Tools

Before you store your gardening tools away for the winter, make sure to clean and polish them. After a busy gardening and lawn care season, your tools get dirty. Remove caked on mud and grass by using steel wool. Simply soak a piece of steel wool in oil and begin scouring each tool. Once finished, dry the tools with a towel and store them until next spring.

Tighten Loose Screws

Loose screws can present all sorts of trouble. To keep screws tightly secured in place, just wind a little bit of steel wool around the screw in question. Tighten the screw as much as you can after the wool is in place and that should get rid of any unnecessary wiggle room.

Keep Rodents Away

Rodents can find all sorts of ways into your home. Mice can squeeze through openings as small as a nickel. If you need a little extra help keeping rodents at bay, steel wool can do just the trick. Just place a bundle of steel wool into vulnerable nooks and crannies around your home. After steel wool has been placed inside the crevices, tape over the area.

Bust Rust

Do you have old tools or patio furniture that are blanketed in rust? Steel wool can make rust easy to remove. Just scrub the surface with a pad of steel wool to reveal the piece's original look. And if you have furniture that you plan on painting or staining, roughing up the surface first with steel wool will give the paint or stain a better chance at gripping onto the piece of furniture.

These are just a few of the ways that you can use steel wool around your home, but there are many more ways. So, next time you are at the store, be sure to pick up some steel wool for yourself!
